The Lifelong ‘Red and Black’ Example

The Club’s Strategic Plan for 2019-2023 outlines ‘Pathways and Opportunities’ as not only a goal, but as part of the vision for the organisation. It is easy to write down or to preach but is another to execute or to have examples of.

Eltham Basketball Club is proud to announce the signing of life long Wildcat Christian Yammouni to the 2020 NBL1 team.

Often people of the club will talk about never having to wear anything but a red and black singlet in order for players to achieve their goals and that doesn’t ring more true than now; since the opportunity to play NBL1 became available. Christian is the example, the poster boy for the Eltham Basketball Club pathway, a Wildcat career spanning 20 years by the end of the NBL1 season.

Head Coach Trevor Lee explains the strategy; “What a story! Grew up in Eltham, did beginners here, went to school where our stadium is, played all his juniors in the one uniform, for the one club at all levels and gets to do that now in the second tier competition in Australia! Couldn’t be a better example of what the guys here have been working toward. We’ve kept our eye on Christian and kept him involved with the senior team, giving him a taste of NBL1 in 2019, but winning the Youth Championship MVP shows he is ready to tackle NBL1 in 2020.”

Known predominantly for his ability at the Point, Christian went from being a pass-first distributor to Julian Lipinski in 2015 who could score a little; gradually adding more to his game; finishing his Youth Championship career in 2019 with stats that had him amongst the top 10 for points, assists, steals and 3FG%, in a team that featured some high level players.

With the signing of Christian Yammouni, it follows the signing of Mark Scherf in a series of ‘junior Wildcat graduate turned senior player’ announcements for the NBL1 2020 season.

Eltham applied in October 2018 to be a Foundation member of the NBL1 and was awarded a license by Basketball Victoria. Being the only elite level sporting program in Melbourne’s north-east, this program helps confirm basketball as the leading sport in the region both at junior and senior levels. With what is now a clearly defined pathway for members to progress from introductory through to the elite; members can pursue their dreams whilst wearing the famous red and black of the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club.
