Weekend Wrap – 13th July

Youth Women
Eltham Wildcats 58 def by Keilor Thunder 81
Top performers: E. Horsely 17 points/11 rebounds, K. Gray 8 points, T. Vine 7 points

A blistering 44-22 start from the 2nd placed Keilor in the first half put Eltham on the back foot early, this mainly due to the visitor’s ability to capitalise on Eltham’s mistakes recording 33 points off turnovers to Eltham’s 9 over the course of the evening. Offensive outbursts in the second half from Keeley Gray and Taylor Vine allowed Eltham to be more competitive in the second half with the Wildcats winning the 4th quarter and only losing the half by 3 points.

Eltham Wildcats 77 def by Diamond Valley 73
Top performers: C. Yammouni 18 points/9 rebounds, Z. Cunningham 14 points/9 rebounds, T. Clifford 10 points

The second last game of the regular season for the Wildcats Youth Men is one they would rather forget going down by four points against local rivals the Diamond Valley Eagles. A desperate Eagles outfit needed a win to make finals and they certainly got the job done on Saturday night behind some brilliant play from L. Liesegang (18 points/10 rebounds) and M. Baggio (15 points).

Eltham won the first quarter but a 11-20 second period by the Eagles would be the difference in the game with the third and fourth periods tied. The game went down to the wire as Zak Cuningham nailed a 2 point jump shot to give Eltham a 73-71 lead with only 1.07 left in the game.  Diamond Valley responded with a three pointer by A. Zeverona and a 6-0 run in the final 60 seconds to secure the win.

After a slow start that would see the Wildcats down 18-23 going into the second period Eltham rallied behind their defence and stormed home with a 20-4 fourth quarter to win their last game of the season by 13 points. The Wildcats bench scored 41 points which is a great sign for Coach Stratford and the group as they head into an Elimination Final this Sunday against Diamond Valley at Eltham High School, tip off 12:00pm.
