Become a Referee

A referee controls the progress of a game ensuring fairness and adherence to the rules. Each game is different, with varied level of skills, age and regulations.

Referees are trained by accredited educators to apply the appropriate standard of rules to each game.

Becoming a basketball referee is more than just knowing the rules, it’s about game management, communication, effort and constant learning. Alongside all participants in the sport, referees help keep the sport enjoyable and fair.

Eltham Wildcats referees have progressed from our Junior Domestic competition to NBL grand finals.

Requirements and Getting Involved

Beginner courses are run by accredited educators and experienced referees.

These educators run a 5-week program that teaches the participants the basic rules of the game (violations, fouls, timing rules), mechanics (where to stand, areas of responsibility), and general techniques of officiating.

Participants will then run alongside a qualified referee on junior domestic games who will guide them through applying their learnings and gaining independence. Educators continue to provide feedback and support to the officials as they gain experience.

The minimum age requirement is 14.

Frequently Asked Questions

Applicants will have a maximum of 14 weeks to display officiating competence on Junior Domestic games. This includes the 5 weeks of theory sessions.

The beginners course is run by qualified referee educators. They run the theory program, and will also be in attendance on the weekend during your games to provide instruction during intervals of play. These educators will pass referees when they are ready.

Your learning is never over. Successful participants will be provided with a referee shirt and will initially continue to officiate younger age groups. Referee educators will continue to provide all officials with guidance, particularly for new officials.
