Eltham Wildcats 102 def Diamond Valley Eagles 63
Top Performers: B. Norris 22 points (in 12mins), M. Scherf 21 points/5 rebounds, O. Magbegor 14 points/8 rebounds/4 steals.
The stage was set with a crowd of 200+ rolling into Eltham High to watch this battle of the North-East in an Elimination Final showdown. The strong Diamond Valley turn out went from buzzing to silence as Eltham jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on the back of a hot start by Ovie Magbegor, this caused a quick time-out from the Eagles to try and slow down the Wildcats and get through their half court defensive pressure. Eltham came out of the break stronger winning the quarter 29-12 and an offensive outburst from Bryson Norris pushed the lead further out in the Wildcat’s favour in the second quarter giving the hometown favourites a 28-point lead going into the half.
Any hope had by Diamond Valley was crushed by a massive Mark Scherf dunk at the beginning of the third quarter of a well designed back door play. Eltham went into the final break up 39 and cruised their way into a Preliminary final spot. The key to Eltham’s success was ball movement which lead to open shots and a shooting percentage of 58%.
Eltham now take on the Melbourne Tigers in a Preliminary Final this Saturday 27th July at Eltham High School. Tip off 7pm. Tickets available now via: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=530573&.
Eltham Wildcats 57 def McKinnon 55
Top Performers: S. Waldron 6 points/14 rebounds, L Brancatisano 12 points/7 assists 5 steals, E Horsley 10 points/10 rebounds.
The battle between 7th and 8th was always set to be a tight one. The teams went shot for shot in the first quarter before McKinnon gained momentum with an 8-0 run in the last 2 minutes of the period. In a low scoring game, the Wildcats kept their turnover numbers low keeping them in the game allowing them to chip away at the Cougars lead going into 3QT down only 1.
Both teams went shot for shot again in a hotly contested 4th quarter with the margin never getting over 5 points. In the last 10 seconds, McKinnon guard Sarsha Follacchio scored a game tying bucket, and as Eltham had no time-outs left, they had to make their way down the full length of the court which ended with a game winning shot by Taylor Vine from the short corner.
A great win from our Youth Women in their last home game of the season.
