With David McLellan’s announcement that he was stepping down as President of the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club after 8 years in the role, it was a rare opportunity for someone to take the Presidency of the leading sporting club in the region.
Congratulations to Peter Meehan who was elected unopposed as the new President of the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club.
Peter isn’t a new face around the club however, having taken on many high level roles in years gone by. For the last 23 years, Peter has been involved in the Eltham-Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament; for the last 13 years as the Tournament Director. Specifically whilst in the Director role, he has overseen the tournament double in size to in excess of 1,300 teams in 2017. Within the club specifically, Peter has been on the Finance Committee since 2000 and was on the Club’s Executive Committee as Treasurer prior to that time. In 2002, Peter was named a Life Member of the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club.
Professionally, Peter has been in several senior Finance roles throughout his career, most notably as the Chief Financial Officer at a number of Australia’s largest businesses. Today, he is retired from full time employment, but maintains a role as Deputy Chancellor at Deakin University where he is also currently Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.
Having had children through the club, now grand children coming into the younger age groups and a strong history with the club over a long period of time, Peter is well placed to be President of the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club.
It is an exciting period of time for Peter Meehan to step into the role with the Club in the midst of a $1.25M development of the Eltham High School, expansion of the St Helena SC stadium and plans for expansion of the Montmorency SC stadium. On court, the club’s junior programs are the largest they’ve ever been, whilst both our Senior and Youth Men’s teams both sit on the top tier of their respective State Championship ladders and of course a team deep in preparations for the inaugural U14 World Championships in Orlando, USA as the Asia Pacific representatives.
In other news from the Annual General Meeting, Darren Black and Nathan Price joined the General Committee and Anthea Cochrane was re-elected unopposed to the Secretary position.
