The Eltham Wildcats are excited to announce the signing of second American import Chelsie Schweers to the Senior Women’s team ahead of the 2019 inaugural NBL1 Season.
The Virginia Beach native attended Christopher Newport University (Virginia) where she was a four time All American and the schools all-time leading point scorer in both men & women’s teams. Chelsie was the D3 National Player of the Year in 2011.
The crafty 5’8 shooting guard has played professionally in Greece, Iceland, Portugal and seen an abundance of success here in Australia. Schweers won Most Valuable Player Awards in the QBL & Waratah League while leading the SEABL in scoring in 2016 playing for Hobart. In 2018 she played for the Sutherland Sharks (NSW) where she averaged 27.93ppg/5.73rpg/4.33apg including four 40+ point games and a 46-point massacre of the Hills Hornets.
Coach Grant Spencer believes Chelsie will make the team better on and off the court.
“She [Chelsie] is a proven performer at this elite level. To have the 2016 (SEABL) league scoring champion in the team rounds out our group nicely. She adds veteran experience, scoring punch and a game winning attitude.
“Having Chelsie working alongside Vanessa, Chelsea & Maggie gives us a very strong core group to tackle our first season in the new NBL1 league,” said Spencer.
Schweers will join the team in March with two goals in mind.
“I’m excited to join Eltham Wildcats, it’s a great club with a huge basketball tradition. I’m grateful to be back playing at this level of basketball in Australia.
“My goal this season is to help lead our team to a Championship and to be a positive role model on and off the court. Being in Melbourne is amazing, it’s a beautiful part of Australia I’m looking forward to exploring.”
